The Environment Ministry will take a final decision on the fate of the controversial Adarsh Housing Society in Mumbai within a week.

The Ministry on Tuesday held the final oral hearing and asked the society to give a written submission.

“Hearing is over and a final decision will be taken within a week,” said a Ministry official.

A lawyer who appeared before the Ministry on behalf of the Society, said that it has been asked to give a written submission. He, however, did not elaborate further.

The Society is accused of violating green laws in construction of the 31-storey building allegedly in a defence land in upmarket Colaba.

The building, originally meant for Kargil war heroes and widows, landed in a controversy after it was found that several senior serving and former Army officers, bureaucrats and kin of politicians were allotted flats in it.

Accepting a request from the Society, the Ministry had on December 28 extended the last date till January 4 for receiving its response on a show-cause notice and had made it clear that it would be the last chance for it.

The Ministry had noted that the society was already given extension three times earlier either for submitting the reply or for hearing in the matter.
