BSP chief Mayawati on Tuesday said the incident of alleged encounter killing of eight purported activists of the banned organisation Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) in Madhya Pradesh appeared "suspicious" prima facie, and demanded a judicial probe into the issue.
Ms. Mayawati alleged police were being misused for “political greed” and pushing the “agenda of the RSS” in the BJP-ruled States. She said based on the accounts of the Madhya Pradesh police, the SIMI activists were "unarmed" and "could have been arrested (captured) again easily." However, "no such attempt was made," the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said.
She said fingers were being raised on the authenticity of the jailbreak and the encounter that followed.
Ms. Mayawati alleged that it was well known that the police were being "misused for political and communal" reasons in the State ruled by the BJP. Targeting the Shivraj Chouhan-led BJP government, she said the State police did not probe the “bloody Vyapam scam” independently and let off scot-free those close to the government.
Ms. Mayawati said episodes like Vyapam and other incidents showed that the State government was using the machinery to "strictly enforce the communal and narrow agenda of the RSS" in the State.
