An Emirates wide-body plane on Tuesday made an emergency landing at the Mumbai airport following an alarm after the detection of smoke on board.

The Boeing 777-300 aircraft with 309 passengers on board landed safely at 1458 hours on the airport's main runway and inspections are on.

It was an international flight operating on the Dubai-Male sector.

After the presence of smoke in the aircraft, the pilot decided to divert the plane to Mumbai.

“Full emergency was declared (at the Mumbai airport) at 1359 hours for flight EK 652 which was diverted to Mumbai. The Boeing 777-300 aircraft was diverted due to smoke observed on board,” said Mumbai International Airport Ltd. (MIAL) spokesperson.

What caused the smoke is still not known. Further investigations are on.
