EVMs: CPI(M) for all-party meet

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday asked the Election Commission to call an all-party meeting to address doubts raised by some political parties about Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) being tamper-proof.

A delegation led by secretary general Prakash Karat met Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla and his colleagues and briefed them about the various aspects and raised questions on the issue.

Among them was the apprehension about the functioning of a particular programme identified as 'Trojan Horse' that gets embedded in the chip, which goes into the machine.

Besides, the delegation, including Parliamentary Party leader and MP SitaramYechury and Central Committee member Srinivasa Rao, sought to underline the lack of technical control by the Commission on the EVMs and absence of third-party inspections at the time of programming the chips.

The EC said it would respond to the queries. These included that the National Informatics Centre be associated to randomly inspect the manufacturing process. The EC should adopt a random technique to send the EVMs out of the State for use instead of randomly sending them to polling stations within the State.
