EC directs Congress to complete internal elections by June 30

January 31, 2017 12:09 am | Updated 12:09 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Election Commission has directed the Congress party to complete the process of holding its internal elections by June 30.

Since September 2015, citing its constitutional rules, the party has twice requested the Commission to postpone the elections.

Stating that no further extension would be granted, in response to the request made last December, the EC in its communique to the party general-secretary has directed it to furnish the list of new office-bearers by July 15.

The Congress Working Committee had, at a meeting in November last year, decided to seek one-year extension from the Election Commission to complete the organisational elections, delaying the elevation of Rahul Gandhi as the party president.
