With the conviction and sentencing of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate assets case, the property found to have been obtained through unfair means will be confiscated, legal experts say.
Under the law, on conclusion of trial in a criminal case, the court may make an order for the disposal of the property. Usually, the lower courts will wait till the parties exhausted all legal remedy, up to the Supreme Court, to issue the order.
Among the material objects marked in the assets case were 468 items of jewellery, 90 wristwatches and a luxury bus. The gold and diamond-studded jewellery weighed 27.588 kg, said an appraising officer who deposed as witness. The jewellery in court custody was placed in the RBI here for safekeeping. It was brought in five big suitcases amid tight security for being marked during the trial here.
