Whenever the Congress is in difficulty, the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party come to its defence and rescue, BJP president Nitin Gadkari said on Thursday. He was commenting on the developments at the Public Accounts Committee meeting, earlier in the day, where the Congress was able to muster a majority with the help of one MP each of the two parties.
At a press conference hurriedly called here after 10 p.m., Mr. Gadkari said the Congress members on the PAC acted the way they did on the instructions and direction of the Prime Minister, and they were desperately trying to shield their leaders from charges of corruption.
As for the SP and the BSP, he said these parties came to the aid of the Congress-led UPA government in 2008 when it sought a trust vote, and again on Thursday when the PAC met to discuss its report on the 2G spectrum scam. Describing Thursday's events as a shame for parliamentary democracy, Mr. Gadkari said his party had already taken the issue of corruption to the people and would fight the battle politically on the ground.
