Dalit student suicide: Writer Ashok Vajpeyi returns D.Litt. from UoH

Writer and poet Ashok Vajpeyi on Tuesday returned the D.Litt. degree awarded to him by the University of Hyderabad. He said the “anti-Dalit” attitude of the university authorities had driven Rohith Vemula to commit suicide.

“How can I continue to be on the honours list of the Hyderabad Central University [in this situation],” Mr. Vajpeyi told a television news channel.

Ever since some students, including Rohith, were thrown out of the university hostel, they were living in a tent.

This was not a proper way to treat research scholars of a university, he said. He said the university, in the latest instance, had acted “against human dignity and knowledge”.
