Congress walks out over Khejuri attack

July 27, 2010 01:16 am | Updated 01:16 am IST - KOLKATA:

Congress legislators walked out of the West Bengal Assembly on Monday in protest against alleged failure of the police to ensure law and order and arrest those responsible for the attack on its party workers at Khejuri in Purbo Medinipur district on July 24.

Earlier, raising a point of order, Congress MLA Asit Mal said the police had not taken necessary steps to ensure peace during the rally despite the administration being informed of the party's programme.

He demanded a statement from Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on the incident and immediate arrest of those responsible for the attack.

Mr. Mal later told journalists that the administration was inciting miscreants to create a wedge between the Congress and the Trinamool Congress and “break our alliance.”

Manas Bhunia, president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee, on Sunday came down strongly on those responsible for the attack on party workers.

Amid reports that activists of the Trinamool Congress were behind the attack, Mr. Bhunia had said that he was asking the Trinamool Congress leadership to “filter out the hoodlums” from its ranks.

He had also said that there were attempts by a particular party to establish its dominance in the Khejuri area “where [there] is no red flag” after “democracy had been rescued from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and peace restored.”
