Congress hails ‘Mohali spirit’

The Congress party on Thursday hailed the “Mohali spirit”, saying that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s meeting with his Pakistan counterpart Yousf Raza Gilani should be seen as a “goodwill gesture“.

“Raising any question or doubt about the meeting of Prime Minister at Mohali with his Pakistan counterpart is totally out of place and unjustified,” AICC general secretary Janardan Dwivedi told reporters.

His comments came close on the heels of the BJP asking government to realise that cricket diplomacy has not worked.

The opposition party said though it favours good relations with Pakistan, it was against politics being mixed with sports.

Mr. Dwivedi wanted the opposition party to realise that it was “not a political meeting on any specific agenda” at Mohali.

“It was a goodwill gesture on the part of the Indian Prime Minister which the Pakistan Prime Minister reciprocated positively and gracefully”, he said, adding that “at Mohali, it is the spirit shown by both the sides which is important and we welcome it“.
