Amid suspicion that >huge money was amassed in the sale of a property in Chennai, the CBI is scrutinising fixed deposits to the tune of Rs. 45 crore in the name of Green House Promoters Pvt. Ltd., a firm in which Sadiq Basha, his wife Reha Banu, and family members of former Union Minister A. Raja were stake holders.

Agency sources said searches were conducted on four more premises of Mr. Raja’s associates in Chennai on Thursday and said several documents relating to property transactions were seized. So far 24 places in New Delhi and Tamil Nadu were searched in connection with the wealth case registered against Mr. Raja, his wife Parameswari and 15 others.

“We came across documents indicating sale of a prime property in Chennai. The fixed deposits worth Rs. 45 crore seem to be proceeds of this sale. The property was acquired during the check period and the transactions not accounted for properly,” a CBI official told The Hindu.

Investigators would rope in Chartered Accountants to examine the documents seized during the searches and seek the assistance of the Central Public Works Department to evaluate the properties acquired by the accused persons.

“We are referring the five diaries seized from the residence of Mr. Raja to the Government Examiner of Questioned Documents for handwriting verification. The diaries contain several entries on transfer of money worth several crores of rupees from New Delhi to Chennai,” the official said.

The CBI seized over 6 kg gold and 20 kg of silver from the premises and bank lockers in the last two days.

“We have seized 200 documents pertaining to immovable properties,” the official said.
