Even as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) decided to file an appeal for enhancement of sentence given to the former Haryana police chief, S.P.S. Rathore, in a molestation case, Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Thursday expressed his unhappiness over the manner in which charges were framed and the trial was conducted in the case.
At a press conference here, Mr. Chidambaram said the victim’s family had told him that they had filed two complaints relating to harassment of her brother and botching up of the post-mortem report of the girl. “Now, they are planning to file another FIR on charge of abetment to suicide,” he said adding he had told the family that he would look into what the government could do.
The CBI said it was examining the possibility of charging Mr. Rathore with abetment to suicide. “It is felt that six months’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs.1,000 is far inadequate especially when the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Chandigarh, concluded that the offence has been proved to the hilt,” spokesman Harsh Bhal said.
