The Central Bureau of Investigation is consulting the Union Law and Home Ministries on making an appeal for enhancing the punishment for the former Haryana Director-General of Police, S.P.S. Rathore, in the case of molestation of a 14-year-old-girl who later committed suicide.
Highly placed sources in the Home Ministry said the CBI might approach court seeking to include the charge of abetment to suicide against Mr. Rathore, whose alleged harassment of the girl’s family led her to end her life this day 16 years ago. Last week, he was awarded a six-month jail term on being convicted of molestation.
The Home Ministry has asked Pankaj Bhardwaj, lawyer of the girl’s family, to come to Delhi on Wednesday to discuss how to pursue the case further, and consider all aspects, including fresh grounds for slapping new charges on the former DGP.
The CBI, which prosecuted the case, said it was consulting the Law and Home Ministries on how to go about the issue.
“The matter is under examination. All aspects, including the one which has been highlighted by the media after the judgment, are being considered by our legal experts,” CBI spokesperson Harsh Bhal said here on Tuesday.
