Referring to the recent murder of a former MLA of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) at Nanur in Birbhum district and the killing of 242 Left Front supporters in West Bengal since the Lok Sabha elections in 2009, Biman Bose, chairman of the State's Left Front Committee, has accused the Trinamool Congress of “creating an anarchical situation by destroying democracy and snatching away people's fundamental rights.”
Mr. Bose told journalists here on Thursday that the former MLA, Ananda Das, was killed “by the Trinamool Congress in a planned way through hired anti-socials” on June 29. He criticised the local administration's “callousness” in handling the situation.
“Could anyone who has minimum respect for the democratic set-up do such a heinous job? Only those who are determined to crush it are capable of doing so,” he said.
Alleging that the local administration did not act “properly” at Nanur, Mr. Bose said: “If the police had intervened in time, the killing could have been averted. The administration should take firm measures against the culprits and act in a stricter manner to prevent the spread of chaos and violence.”
‘Links with Maoists'
Drawing attention to the “alarming situation” in several areas across the State, he reiterated the Left Front's allegation of a nexus between the State's main Opposition party and the Maoists.
“Out of the 242 Left Front supporters killed across the State, 139 have died in the three districts of Paschim Medinipur, Bankura and Purulia, where the Trinamool and the Maoists are working hand-in-glove.
“Though both of them vehemently deny the connection, the link becomes apparent when leaders of the Trinamool are seen attending rallies organised by Maoist-front organisations,” Mr. Bose said.
He also alleged that certain names appearing on the Trinamool's list of party supporters killed — which was given to the Prime Minister — find mention in a booklet released by the Maoists about their martyrs.
Furnishing a list of persons killed or abducted by the Maoists in the three districts, Mr. Bose said the rebels were mostly killing poor tribal people to create panic among them and retain control over them.
