Days after the neighbouring BJP-led Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation(MBMC) banned sale of meat for eight days during the fasting season of 'Paryushan', Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now banned meat in Mumbai for four days.
Through a 1994 order, the BMC had been restricting slaughter and sale of meat for two days in Mumbai during the Jain festival and this year it has extended it to four days: 10, 13, 17 and 18 September. The ban of meat is not new to Mumbai as it has seen a total ban on slaughter and sale of beef in Maharastra just earlier this year.
Mumbai, a melting pot of various cultures and communities, has a Jain population over 8.5 lakhs and the BJP and the BMC claim that the decision was made in view of the sentiments of the Jain community. Opposition parties, including the Shiv Sena, oppose the ban.
This announcement did not go down well on Twitter, triggering reactions ranging from the comic to fervent opposition. #MeatBan has been trending on Twitter since the announcement on Monday evening.
Here are some of the reactions:
Our forefathers worked hard to get us freedom. It's precious. Don't give it up so easily just because a particular ban suits your taste.
