The condition of veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu remained critical on Tuesday.
The mild fever he had developed has abated now, according to a medical bulletin released by the hospital in the evening. He continued to be on ventilation support and drugs to stabilise blood pressure. Though his neurological status remains the same, the medical board constituted by the hospital where he was admitted with pneumonia on January 1 suggested a CT scan of his brain after reviewing his condition in the morning. The CT scan showed that there was “no fresh changes in the subdural haematoma [blood clot] in Mr. Basu’s brain,” the hospital authorities said.
Mr. Basu had suffered a blood clot in his brain after a fall, but doctors ruled out surgery, considering his age.
Reports of blood and urine tests did not suggest any growth of infectious micro-organisms, Dr. A.K. Maiti, one of the specialists attending on Mr. Basu, told journalists.
