Bar Council issues show cause to Suresh Mehta

To reply within 15 days as to why he should not be debarred from its rolls

January 24, 2011 02:21 am | Updated December 16, 2016 02:47 pm IST - AHMEDABAD:

The Bar Council of Gujarat (BCG) on Sunday issued notice to the former Chief Minister, Suresh Mehta, a lawyer, to reply within 15 days why he should not be debarred from the rolls of the BCG.

The decision to issue Mr. Mehta the notice was taken at a requisitioned meeting of the BCG held here on a complaint by five advocate members of the Council about his alleged “misconduct.”

It was the second time Mr. Mehta was issued the notice.

Mr. Mehta's recent statement supporting the advocates who were fighting the cases of the 2002 communal riot victims in Gujarat was construed as “misconduct.” Mr. Mehta had reportedly threatened to lead an agitation if the BCG took any punitive action against five other advocates fighting the cases of the communal riot victims.
