Samajawadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi today approached Maharashtra Government, seeking `Z’ category security after MLAs of Raj Thackeray-led MNS assaulted him in the state Assembly last week.

“The party delegation met Home Minister R R Patil and demanded `Z’ security for my protection, as I still face threat from MNS and Sena activists,” Mr. Azmi said.

Mr. Azmi was beaten by MNS MLAs for taking oath in Hindi.

Sena activists had also gheraoed him outside the Assembly after he made some remarks about Balasaheb Thackeray.

A member of the delegation said Mr. Patil assured to provide more security to Mr. Azmi.

A letter submitted to the Home Minister demanded that `Z’ category security should be given to Azmi considering the attack by MNS.

The party has also criticised the Government for not providing security to Mr. Azmi earlier, despite Raj warning all MLAs to take oath only in Marathi.

Four MNS MLAs were suspended for four years for attacking Mr. Azmi.
