Army chief General Bipin Rawat on Wednesday called for “fast updating on weather patterns” to avoid casualties, days after 20 soldiers died in avalanches and snow-caving incidents in the Kashmir region.
“There is need to be constantly aware of the weather patterns prevailing in the area [where troops are deployed] and take all necessary precautions to avoid any untoward incidents,” General Rawat directed Army officers.
Accompanied by Chinar Corps Commander Lt. General J.S. Sandhu and Northern Army Commander Lt. General D. Anbu, the Army chief visited formations on the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir, where he was briefed on “operational and logistical preparedness”.
Lauds alert troops
General Rawat commended the alertness of the troops deployed along the LoC in foiling the nefarious designs of inimical forces.
“Our endeavour is to maintain a high degree of vigil,” he said.
The Army chief assessed the latest ground situation in south Kashmir, where militancy is showing an upward trend.
General Bipin Rawat appreciated the professionalism with which troops have been operating in full synergy with other security and civil agencies to keep the situation under control, and impressed upon everyone to uphold human rights at all times, according to an Army spokesman.
