Four persons were killed and six severely injured when the son of a former Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) MLA from East Bardhaman district allegedly ran over them in an accident late on Friday night.

The incident took place when Hamidulla Chowdhury, the son of former CPI-M MLA from Monteswar Chaudhuri Mohd. Mr. Hidayatullah, was trying to trying to flee from some persons whose motorcycle he had rammed into at Kusumgram village in Kalna sub division. No one has been arrested in the case so far.

“Mr. Hamidulla was drunk at the time of the incident. In a bid to flee from people who were chasing him, he was driving at a high speed,” said Mr. Md. Saied, who was with Hamidulla Chowdhury in the car during the incident. He lost control and allegedly ploughed into nine people who were loading paddy into a tractor nearby. Mr. Saied was later detained by police for interrogation.

“While two of them died on the spot, two more succumbed to their injuries at the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital,” said a senior police official of Monteswar Police Station. However, police is yet to ascertain whether Hamidulla Chowdhury was driving during the incident. Police have not been able to trace Hamidulla Chowdhury yet.
