Tahawwur Rana extradition unlikely before 2023, indicates U.S.

Indian agencies will have to wait a little longer before Tahawwur Rana, a key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case is extradited here from the U.S. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) team that was in the U.S. a few days ago to seek the extradition of Rana, a close associate of David Coleman Headley, has been given an indication that Rana has to first complete his jail sentence.

Election Commission cancels Tiruvarur Assembly by-poll

The Election   Commission has decided not to hold the Tiruvarur by-election, slated for January 28. The by-election notification now stood rescinded, according to Satyabrata Sahoo, Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer.

As a consequence of the cancellation of the notification, actions and steps taken by the Returning Officer for the constituency were "declared null and void."

West Bengal tribals battling food scarcity: study

Two months after the West Bengal   government denied any food scarcity as a possible cause of death of seven persons from a tribal community, a survey report has identified “food scarcity in varying degrees” in about 31% of tribal households in West Bengal.

Jay Panda’s next political move in ‘final stages’

Former Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Lok Sabha member Baijayant Panda, popularly known as Jay Panda, said that he is in the “final stages” of deciding the next political plan after his parting with Odisha Chief Minister and BJD chief Naveen Patnaik.

Kirti Chakra awardee beaten up in road rage

Lieutenant Colonel Anup Joseph Manjali (36), a Kirti Chakra awardee, was allegedly assaulted by five youngsters in an incident of road rage in Malad (West) in the early hours of Sunday. He is being treated for a dislocated shoulder and injuries under his eye, and to the forehead and head, at a suburban hospital.

Boulders fall in Meghalaya mine, kill two

A second disaster has struck Meghalaya’s illegal coal mines in less than a month, claiming the lives of two miners. Three more, locals said, are trapped in another rat-hole mine nearby. The police in Jaintia Hills on Sunday confirmed that Elad Bareh and Monoj Basumatary were killed when boulders fell on them from a side-cutting mine at Mooknor in Jalyiah village. The incident happened on Friday.

Panel concerned at CBI vacancies

A parliamentary standing committee has raised concern over non-filling of vacancies in the Central Bureau of Investigation saying it will impact on its performance. The committee said the level of vacant positions in executive rank, law officers and technical officers is about 16, 28 and 56% respectively.

More Britons want to remain in EU

More Britons want to remain a member of the European Union (EU) than leave, according to a survey published on Sunday. The survey by YouGov showed that if a referendum were held immediately, 46% would vote to remain, 39% would vote to leave, and the rest either did not know, would not vote, or refused to answer the question.
