U.S. President Barack Obama arrived in the Philippines on Monday on the last leg of a four-nation Asian tour to push his administration’s pivot to the region.

Mr. Obama touched down in Manila hours after the Philippines and the U.S. signed a new defence pact that allows an increased American military presence in the country.

He is making the Asian trip amid rising regional tensions over territorial disputes in the South China Sea, which Beijing claims almost entirely.

Mr. Obama is scheduled to meet with Philippine President Benigno Aquino at the Malacanang presidential palace, and later attend a state dinner in his honour.
