Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have arrested several people suspected of links to al-Qaeda, WAM news agency reported on Thursday.

The alleged members of the terrorist group comprises seven Arab nationals, added the agency.

“The cell planned to carry out acts targeting the country’s security and safety of citizens and expatriates,” an unnamed official said.

The official added that the group was seeking to recruit new members and “propagating works of al-Qaeda.” The suspects were being questioned by state security prosecutors ahead of their trial, said the official.
