Police said a suspect in a shooting at a FedEx centre outside Atlanta that wounded six people is dead and appears to have shot himself.

Cobb County police spokesman Michael Bowman said on Tuesday the suspect died from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. He said police are still sweeping the package-sorting facility north of Atlanta to make sure there are no other threats.

Police have not reported any other deaths from the shootings that occurred before daybreak. Six people were taken to a local hospital, where a spokesman said one was taken into surgery with potentially critical injuries. He said several others were able to walk off ambulances when they arrived.

“We are aware from the authorities of the situation,” said Scott Fiedler, a FedEx spokesman. “Our primary concern is the safety and wellbeing of our team members, first responders and others affected.”
