Putin demands immediate direct peace talks in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday said that all warring factions in the conflict in Ukraine should immediately start direct peace talks.

“We believe that peace shall prevail on Ukrainian land and that direct contacts between all opposing sides should be established as soon as possible,” Mr. Putin was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.

The Ukrainian government has so far firmly rejected any direct talks with the separatists.
