More than 100 suspects were taken into custody on Friday after a pair of Italian police raids against Mafia organizations, reported Italian media.
About 500 officers, including special units and helicopter crews, were called out in Rome. It was believed to be the largest such-action in Rome’s history. According to reports, 51 people were arrested, including the leaders of several Mafia clans.
Those arrested face charges of corruption and international drug trafficking.
The second raid was staged in Lamezia Terme, in the country’s Calabria region, and netted 65 people, including police officers, businessmen, lawyers and doctors, according to the Ansa news agency.
Police there also confiscated goods worth 1.2 million euros (1.6 million dollars). Those arrested are suspected of involvement in multiple murders related to a Mafia war between 2005 and 2011.
