Damascus blast kills eight, injures 50

Syrian state media say a bomb has exploded in a central district of Damascus, killing at least eight people.

The state news agency SANA says the bomb detonated at the entrance to a building near the central Hijaz square midday Wednesday. Eight people were killed and dozens wounded in the blast.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad have frequently targeted Damascus, the seat of his power, with bombs.

According to DPA 50 people were injured in the attack.
