The African Union (AU) on Monday suspended the Central African Republic from the bloc’s activities and imposed sanctions, including travel bans and asset freezes, on seven top officials from the Seleka rebel group.
The AU called on its members to “completely isolate” the new rebel government and urged the United Nations and European Union to reject the “unconstitutional change.”
Bozize in Cameroon
Cameroon on Monday confirmed that Francois Bozize, the ousted president of the Central African Republic, had fled to the neighbouring country.
“Yes, he is in the country, in Batouri ... he came yesterday evening around 6 pm,” an official in Cameroon’s defence ministry told DPA on condition of anonymity.
Batouri lies in eastern Cameroon, near the border with the conflict-torn country. Initial reports said that Mr. Bozize had fled to the Democratic Republic of Congo when the Seleka rebel alliance captured the capital Bangui on Sunday.
