Three killed in Peshawar police station attack

February 24, 2012 09:57 am | Updated 09:57 am IST - PESHAWAR

Police said militants armed with assault rifles, grenades and smoke bombs have attacked a police station in northwest Pakistan, killing at least three policemen.

Police officer Sattar Khan said seven other policemen were wounded in Friday’s early morning attack in the heart of the city of Peshawar.

Peshawar is close to the border with Pakistan’s tribal region, the main sanctuary for al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters, and has been a frequent target of the militants. But this type of attack on a police station in the heart of the city is fairly rare.
