Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the disgraced former chief of the International Monetary Fund, has separated from his wife, the journalist Anne Sinclair, according to news reports. French tabloids have speculated about strains on the couple and a possible split for months.

“Ms. Sinclair asked Mr. Strauss-Kahn to leave the apartment a month ago,” said Laurence Pieau, editor-in-chief of Closer, a magazine that on Thursday evening published an article saying the couple had separated.

Mr. Strauss-Kahn moved to the elegant hotel Lutetia in central Paris and later to a friend’s place in the residential 16th Arrondissement, Mr. Pieau said in a phone interview.

“For me, it is a definitive breakup,” she said, declining to reveal her sources.

Ms. Sinclair had been publicly supportive of her husband after his arrest last year in New York on charges that he sexually assaulted Nafissatou Diallo, a hotel maid. The couple married in 1991, and she had long been aware of his reputation as a womaniser.

But French newspapers said their marriage had fallen apart after allegations that Mr. Strauss-Kahn had been involved in a prostitution ring centred in the northern French city of Lille. It remains unclear whether the couple have filed for divorce.

Mr. Strauss-Kahn’s lawyers could not be reached for comments on Friday.

Ms. Sinclair, a noted television journalist and wealthy heiress who recently became the top news editor at the French version of The Huffington Post, had not been seen with her husband since April, when the two attended a party in Paris.

She appeared alone this month at a film premiere in Paris.

Mr. Strauss-Kahn was charged with “aggravated procurement in an organised gang” — the legal term for pimping — in March. Police are also investigating allegations that he sexually assaulted a Belgian prostitute at a hotel in Washington in 2010.

Mr. Strauss-Kahn and Ms. Sinclair, both 63, met on a television set in 1989. She has two children from a previous marriage, while Mr. Strauss-Kahn has been married twice before and has four children . — New York Times News Service
