A special narcotic control force will be established to tackle the growing problem of drug abuse in the Northern Province, according to Nilanga Samarasingha, chairman of the National Dangerous Drug Control Board. Headed by Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran, the force will include officials of various departments, including Police, Coast Guard, National Drug Control Board, Police Narcotics Bureau and Excise, Dr. Samarasingha told The Hindu .
Earlier, the Chief Minister, in his speech pointed out that drugs were hardly known in the Province before May 2009. He said post-War conditions such as depression, especially among youngsters, and an economic compulsion to make quick money had all contributed to the present state of affairs.
