At least three Taliban militants including a senior commander have been killed in a US drone strike in northwest Pakistan’s border region with Afghanistan.

Senior commander Khawrey Meshud, who was a close relative of former Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud, was killed alongwith two other Taliban members when the CIA—operated drone targeted the outlawed Tehreek—e—Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants in Shabak area of Kurram tribal district on Wednesday.

“Commander Khawrey died near the Pak—Afghan border on March 18,” TTP spokesman Muhammad Khorasani said, adding, two other TTP members were also killed in the attack.

Khawrey Mehsud was also close to TTP founder Baitullah Mehsud, who was also killed in a US drone strike in 2009, two years after he formed the TTP. Khawrey had also served as Hakimullah Mehsud’s personal guard.
