Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Friday invited Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran to accompany him to India, to attend Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony.

The President’s spokesperson told The Hindu that an invitation had been extended to the Chief Minister, and that the President’s office was yet to get a confirmation regarding the same.

Enquiries with sources in the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) – the party governing the Northern Province – on Friday morning revealed that they had not received the invitation at that time. The party, reliable sources said, would take a call on the invitation once they receive it.

The Sri Lankan government and the TNA had welcomed Mr. Modi’s massive victory in the Indian elections, both sides expressing desire to work with him.
