Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday said his government wants peace within and outside the country’s borders to achieve economic development.

“Pakistan desires peace and tranquillity both within and outside its borders so that the much needed socio-economic development goals are achieved. We cannot afford to be distracted in fulfilling our national objectives,” he said while addressing Naval officers after inaugurating the newly constructed building of Naval War College here.

“Let me assure you that my government will consistently endeavour to pursue the cherished national targets it has set to achieve. I am certain that the positive effects of our untiring efforts will be visible soon,” he said.

Mr. Sharif asserted that while desiring peace in his country, he “will never compromise on its sovereignty and independence”.

His remarks came amid continued border tension between India and Pakistan.
