Hasina rules out declaring state of emergency

February 05, 2015 12:30 am | Updated November 16, 2021 05:16 pm IST - DHAKA:

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday dismissed chances of declaring a state of emergency to tackle the month-long violent blockade by the BNP-Jamaat alliance.

“No one has been able to create a situation that calls for an emergency now. We will be able to tackle the situation with the people on our side,” Ms. Hasina told the national Parliament on Wednesday.

She also seemed firm in containing the violence using the help of law-enforcing agencies, saying they would “tackle the terrorism.”

Meanwhile, the BNP-led alliance, whose blockade completed 30 days on Wednesday, resolved to continue protests till its demand for a “dialogue on a snap general election” under a ‘neutral’ government was met.

Khaleda sued

Ms. Khaleda Zia was sued as an instigator in two cases filed over an arson attack on a bus on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway on Tuesday. Eight people were burnt alive and 16 were critically injured in the attack.
