Religious ceremonies throughout the country, poor feeding, alms giving, distribution of aid and inauguration of schemes were among a slew of activities that marked Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa's birthday on Friday. This also marks the first anniversary of his second term in office. Mr. Rajapaksa turned 66. He was elected the fifth President in November 2005. Mr. Rajapaksa and his wife Shiranthi Rajapaksa preferred to spend most of their morning with over 1000 children, who share their birthday with him.

For many parents, who were invited to Temple Trees, the official residence of the President for the first time, it was a moment to cherish. Many beamed as the President sat in their midst and played with the children.

He also watched a host of performances that the children had rustled up before enquiring with a few pre-teens on how they fared in their studies.

His normally business-like and serious brother, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, was in a jovial mood, obliging children and posing for photo sessions with them.

Later in the evening a pirith chanting ceremony was held at his residence.
