In a major shift in stance, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has backtracked from its long-held demand to restore the caretaker government for national elections.

Indicating a change of heart in the new political environment where her party, not in Parliament, is in crisis, the BNP chief said, “I would not stick to the gun that the election has to be held under the caretaker government. I demand a fair election under a neutral government which can be called by any name”.

Compromise

She also expressed eagerness to arrive at a compromise on the issue. BNP had boycotted the parliamentary elections held in January 2014, after the ruling Awami League of Sheikh Hasina refused to have a caretaker government. Ever since, the party has been functioning as a non-parliamentary opposition.
