The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for fatally shooting an Italian aid worker in Dhaka’s diplomatic quarter on Monday, according to an intelligence group that monitors jihadist threats.
The IS said in a statement that a “security detachment” had tracked and killed Cesare Tavella with “silenced weapons,” according to the SITE Intelligence Group’s website. But the Bangladesh government said it did not have proof to back the claim.
Tavella, 50, was the project manager of Profitable Opportunities for Food Security (Proofs), a project of the Netherlands-based organisation ICCO Cooperation.
