Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani said that negotiations with the Taliban are the way to “end the bloodshed” and bring peace to the country.

Mr. Ghani spoke at the presidential palace in Kabul on Friday, after morning prayers for the start of Eid al-Fitr.

Mr. Ghani has made peace talks with the Taliban a priority for his administration.

The President also thanked Mullah Mohammad Omar, the Afghan Taliban leader, for his statement this week backing the peace talks.

Mr. Ghani said it’s important the Taliban “want to join the political process.”
