Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apologised on Wednesday for wearing brownface makeup to a costume party in 2001, an image that could undermine his chances for re-election with less than five weeks to go before the national election.
“I should have known better then, but I didn't and I did it and I'm deeply sorry,” Mr. Trudeau told reporters on his campaign plane in Halifax, Nova Scotia, after Time magazine published the image.
Time says the photo came from the yearbook from the West Point Grey Academy, a private school in British Columbia where Mr. Trudeau worked as a teacher before entering politics.
The photo depicts Mr. Trudeau wearing a turban and robe, with dark makeup on his hands, face and neck.
Mt. Trudeau told reporters traveling with him on his campaign plane Wednesday: “I’m pissed off at myself; I’m disappointed in myself.”
The Prime Minister said he made a mistake and asked Canadians to forgive him.
