Bangladesh briefs foreign missions in Delhi

Days before a crucial UN meet on the Rohingya refugee crisis, Bangladesh on Tuesday said that the international community should increase pressure on Myanmar. High Commissioner Syed Moazzem Ali here addressed diplomats of 78 countries that have concurrent diplomatic accreditation to Bangladesh and said that Myanmar’s actions have imposed a heavy price on Bangladesh.

The briefing of the diplomats was conducted to seek support for a draft resolution which will be considered by the 3rd Committee of the United Nations General Assembly on 15 November. The draft resolution has been co-sponsored by 99 countries. Bangaldesh is expected to repatriate 2,000 Rohingya refugees to Myanmar on the same day.

Last year, a resolution on the “Situation of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar” was overwhelmingly adopted at the 3rd Committee with 135 countries voting in favor, 10 against and 26 abstaining.
