A motorcycle-borne suicide bomber targeted a van transporting prisoners in northwest Pakistan today, injuring 10 policemen.

The attacker rammed his motorcycle into the van near a jail in Timergara, the main city of Lower Dir district in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province, local media reports said.

The van was destroyed by the blast.

Earlier reports had said the van was targeted with a remote controlled explosive device.

The 10 injured policemen were taken to Timergara hospital. Later, two policemen in critical condition were taken to Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa.

Reports said police fired in the air shortly after the blast.

No group claimed responsibility for the blast.

Taliban militants are active in the area and have attacked security forces and political activists in Lower Dir district in the past.
