North Korea issues first report on Hu-Obama summit

North Korea’s official news agency has issued its first report on recent talks between President Barack Obama and his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao.

The Korean Central News Agency said on Saturday that a joint statement issued after Wednesday’s talks stressed the importance of improving relations between the two Koreas and called for dialogue.

It said the statement also urged an early resumption of six-nation negotiations on ending North Korea’s nuclear weapons programmes.

The brief dispatch was North Korea’s first report on the summit and contained no commentary.

It comes two days after South Korea decided to accept a North Korean proposal for high-level defence talks.
