A political party that just left Nepal’s coalition government partnered with the main opposition party and filed a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli on Wednesday.
The motion was filed in parliament a day after the Maoist party pulled out of the government, accusing Mr. Oli of failing to honour past agreements.
The Maoists and the main opposition Nepali Congress party are now trying to form a new coalition government.
But he won’t quit
Mr. Oli is refusing to resign, insisting he’ll face the confidence vote, which will likely take place next week. It could take weeks for a new coalition government to take power.
Mr. Oli became Prime Minister last October, heading Nepal’s eighth government in the past 10 years.
The Maoists are former communist rebels who fought government troops for 10 years until they joined a U.N.-monitored peace agreement and entered mainstream politics. They had a key role in the abolishing of Nepal’s centuries-old monarchy, turning the Himalayan nation into a republic.
