Authorities in the U.S. capital are investigating after a drive—by shooting killed three people and wounded six.

Officials say three people were arrested after the Tuesday night shooting and a weapon was recovered.

Washington, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier says a gunman sprayed bullets into a crowd.

Police spokesman Officer Hugh Carew says the shootings of six men and three women happened around 7:30 p.m. in the south-eastern part of the city. Fire Department spokesman Pete Piringer says all the victims were in their 20s and 30s, except for one teenager.

Police say they do not know what motivated the shooting.
