The three-day general strike called by the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) which crippled normal life ends on Tuesday.
Baburam Bhattarai, chairman of the United National People’s Movement that launched the strike, said the strike would conclude on Tuesday afternoon with rallies and assemblies. However, he warned of more protests if the government did not address their demand to restore civilian supremacy.
As a part of their third round of agitation against President Ram Baran Yadav’s decision to reinstate the then Army Chief Rookmangud Katwal in May, the Maoists declared 13 autonomous states and launched the three-day strike. The CPN(UML)-led government has termed the Maoists’ actions “against the Comprehensive Peace Agreement”.
The strike turned violent on the first day on Sunday with several clashes between the police and the protesters across the country. A Deputy Superintendent of Police was seriously injured by the Maoists.
On Monday, nearly a dozen vehicles were vandalised by the protesters and police arrested 17 protesters.
