Turkey’s leaders and the military chief say an investigation into high—ranking officers accused of plotting to topple the Islamic—rooted government will be handled according to the law.
President Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Gen. Ilker Basbug, issued the joint statement on Thursday after a three-hour meeting. It says “the public must be assured that matters will be handled in line with the law and everyone should act responsibly not to damage institutions.”
The statement downplays the importance of the rare trilateral meeting, saying the leaders have preferred to hold their routine meetings together this week.
