Japan’s prime minister says he is looking to raise the country’s sales tax as he looks at ways to its tax and social security systems.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan said on Monday that the reforms are crucial for helping Japan face major problems, including a rapidly aging population, growing national debt and a weak economy.
His speech marked the opening of the parliamentary session. One of the first items of business will be passing next fiscal year’s budget.
