Earthquake jolts Manila

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 has slightly shaken buildings in the Philippine capital and nearby provinces. It is not expected to have caused any damage as it occurred deep under the ocean floor.

Renato Solidum, who heads the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, says movement in the local Lubang fault set off the earthquake that was felt after nightfall on Monday in metropolitan Manila and the nearby provinces of Batangas and Bulacan.

Mr. Solidum says he was not expecting any damages or injuries. Some residents felt dizzy and got jittery.

The Philippines, like Japan, lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire where earthquakes are common.
