Chinese state media say a rescue team is on standby ready to go to Japan after a massive earthquake and tsunami.

The official Xinhua News Agency said on Friday that the Beijing Red Cross Blue Sky Rescue Team had contacted the Japanese Embassy with an offer to help.

It says the non—governmental organization had already put its members on standby. Japan sent a civilian emergency rescue team and medical team to China after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.

The tsunami swept away boats, homes and people as widespread fires burned out of control. Kyodo news agency said 15 people were killed.
